Director, Finance

Reporting to the Chief Finance & Operations Officer, the Director of Finance will be responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting and budget processes, conducting strategic analyses of business performance and forecasting, and providing oversight of the finance department. This position provides direct leadership and oversight for the organization’s finance and accounting functions, including compliance with any relevant government regulations, and ensuring that business operations systems run smoothly and efficiently. This position is an integral part of the organization's management team and will meet the demands and opportunities of this dynamic, fast-paced, and ambitious organization. They will balance setting a strategic vision for the finance team with a hands-on approach to managing financial operations.


Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop, analyze and interpret statistical and financial information to advise Senior Management of operating results in terms of performance against budget and other fiscal matters and operating effectiveness of the organization
  • Review, prepare and finalize monthly and annual financial reports for the management team, Board of Directors, Finance and Audit Committees
  • Manage 3 full-time and 2 part-time team members, in addition to hiring additional staff as needed
  • Coordinate all audit activities in conjunction with the Audit Committee
  • Set the agenda and develop supporting materials for regular meeting of the Finance Committee
  • Lead the organizations financial planning, helping Board of Directors and staff to advance the organizations’ mission
  • Inform Senior Management and the Board of Directors of financial, risk and compliance matters as appropriate to their oversight and governance responsibilities, ensuring they have the information and context necessary for responsible decision-making
  • Plan for continuous improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the department, providing the finance team with professional and personal growth opportunities

Financial Management

  • Present complex financial information to internal and external stakeholders; liaise directly with and manage the Board’s Finance Committee and Audit Committee
  • Oversee successful completion of annual audits, IRS filings and other mandated financial reports
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s fiscal function, providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets and financial reports that will assist Senior Management and the Board in managing their responsibilities
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy and usefulness of all financial reports, develop and maintain appropriate accounting procedures
  • Manage the finance team to operate with a focus on supporting key stakeholders, ensuring the execution of operational finance activities (e.g., management of accounts payable and receivable, fund tracking, reporting, etc.)
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash flow analysis, lease agreement and vendor reporting
  • Other duties, as assigned



The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes.  S/he will have the skills listed below as well as the ability to become proficient in areas deemed necessary for the effective running of the Organization in the future:

  • A minimum of ten years related experience and a track record of success leading a finance function
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex financial data (both written and verbal), articulate trade-offs and distill information into clear recommendations for a range of decision-makers
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills with a track record of developing and strengthening systems and processes
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead the financial modeling required to support strategic decision making
  • Demonstrated understanding of non-profit organizational structure and 501(c)(3) provisions
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate and effectively interact with internal and external colleagues, as needed
  • Results-oriented with a dedication to ensuring that colleagues and senior management have what they need to meet their goals
  • Familiarity with audit, compliance and internal control issues, and best practices related to risk management and insurance

Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; CPA or advanced degree in finance or accounting strongly preferred
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple requests
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
