Meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

A ‘Beautiful’ Word of Thanks

Winter Wishes, a 20-year-old program where New Yorkers answer holiday letters written by kids, teens, and seniors from NYC’s community centers, homeless shelters, and schools, engages thousands of generous volunteers and gift givers every year, and brightens the lives of thousands of New Yorkers who may not be expecting much over the holiday season.

For each of the past three years, the Winter Wishes program has matched over 40,000 letters from residents in need to willing volunteers who answer the letters by buying and sending back the gifts requested. The volunteers who participate range from employees at various community-minded corporations to small groups of friends looking to give back in some way. The entire program is made possible by long-time sponsors Julie Turaj and Robert Pohly.

This year, we learned that the cast and crew from Beautiful - the Carole King musical on Broadway, has been participating in Winter Wishes for the past two years. We sent a staff member over to capture the story and what we ended up with was an ode to the magic of Winter Wishes and to the thousands of gift givers who’ve been involved over the years.
