Jai Singh has a passion in life, and it’s to help others learn English the best they can.
Jai has been volunteering with New York Cares since 2006, and don’t think he’s stopping anytime soon! With America’s population growing by leaps and bounds, Jai is ready to meet the rising need for English tutors and conversation partners to help immigrants acclimate themselves to their new lives.
Jai does more than just teach English; he is a friend and companion to people who need support the most. Kudos to Jai for opening doors for his fellow New Yorkers! This is one situation where words speak louder than actions.

As summer approaches and outdoor distractions abound, NYC students can often use a little extra help making sure they stay focused on their school work and end the year with great grades.
We have several new after school Homework Help programs ready to go in Queens, but our partners at I.S. 5 Q in Elmhurst, Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities in Corona, and St. Michael’s School in Flushing have been waiting months on Team Leaders to launch these projects!
Help us get them off the ground – contact Priscilla.Lam@newyorkcares.org about becoming a Homework Help Team Leader. You can choose to work with students from kindergarten to middle school age, reviewing assignments and providing academic support through the end of the school year.

Halfway through the school year, we hosted a happy hour for our Kaplan SAT tutors to thank them for their hard work so far and rally them for the remaining tutoring sessions this semester.
Volunteers, Team Leaders, and contacts from partnering schools and agencies came out to Metro 53 last week to meet each other, talk about their experiences, and exchange tips for keeping students motivated for the spring semester. According to one attendee, the tutors shared “plenty of insight into how to work with the kids, and it was interesting to hear different perspectives. It was also a great chance to network.”
Thanks to everyone who joined us, and we look forward to seeing you at the next SAT event! If you’re interested in getting involved in the Kaplan SAT program, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.

This semester we launched a new program to help disadvantaged high school students succeed. Sophomore Skills is designed to prepare students for our longstanding Kaplan SAT Prep program, which provides SAT tutoring for 800 students each year.
Students in Sophomore Skills work with volunteers to get up to speed on basic math and English skills so their time spent with our SAT tutors in their junior year is even more successful.

Do you miss the days when learning new things was fun and exciting?
Relive your youth and brush up on your math skills by playing games like Math Baseball and Fraction Bingo with fourth graders who need a little help with basic math concepts. You’ll all learn a little something through fun and educational games like Flash-Card Races and Place Value War.
We’re looking for volunteers who can commit to one Wednesday morning (7:45 – 8:40 a.m.) each week throughout the school year at P.S. 24 K in Sunset Park, near the D, M, N, and R trains.
Sign up today – You don’t have to be a math whiz to join!

4 days. 145 miles. 5 New York Cares employees. 1 U-haul van.
That’s what it took to deliver 2250 exams and 750 student books, calculators, and dictionaries to the 28 schools and community centers participating in this year’s Kaplan SAT program. Tutoring is well under way for the school year all across the city, as you can see from our delivery routes below (we’re in Staten Island too). A huge thanks to the hundreds of tutors who make this possible!
