Support for Haiti Earthquake Survivors

January 13th, 2010

The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday has affected an estimated 3 million people that desperately need your help.

Emergency relief organizations are already on site providing water, shelter, medical care, sanitation facilities, and other supplies. Help them aid survivors by making a donation today to one of these organizations or the nonprofit of your choice.

  1. I am a teacher and I want my students to be able to make a contribution. The majority of the websites I have researched are asking for cash donations. Can we send food and clothing? If so, where can we send these items? Who can help us?

  2. I am planning to volunteer on Monday, January 18th for the King Day of Service. Based on what’s happened recently in Haiti, I would really like to find a project that is specific to the relief efforts. Do you know of any such project(s) taking place this Monday, January 18th? Thank you.

  3. Robert, New York Cares does not currently have any disaster relief projects, but Service Nation is a great place to find ways you can help on MLK Day 2010.

  4. Aliyah, relief organizations are requesting money so that on-the-ground organizations can buy exactly what they need from the nearest source exactly when they need it, and unfortunately the country’s infrastructure is so badly damaged that getting supplies shipped in is proving extremely difficult right now. More information on how to help can be found here. If we hear of local organizations collecting supplies, we will post here.

  5. Hi, I’m desperately trying to find a place accepting clothing donations. Being a college student, I can’t afford monetary donations but I do have alot of clothes that would serve better use in Haiti than in my closet

  6. Right now we’re still not aware of any organizations collecting supplies on a large-scale, but you might try contacting The Salvation Army or a local church like the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Charity Navigator has a list of organizations involved in the relief effort and gives tips on donating.

  7. Hello, I’m interested in deploying to Haiti to volunteer on behalf of the Red Cross. Can you tell me of any missions that might be coming up?

    Thank you

  8. For anyone looking to find more information about the efficiency of a charity (i.e. the percentage of funds spend on their work versus fund raising and administrative costs), particularly since this is a long list of charitable organizations, a good resource is Charity Navigator. http://www.charitynavigator.org

  9. Patricia, New York Cares is not currently working with the Red Cross to send volunteers to Haiti. You should contact the Red Cross directly about possible volunteer opportunities.
