A New Volunteer Finds Many Ways to Help

December 4th, 2012

The outpouring of support following Hurricane Sandy has brought a lot of new volunteers to our organization, and we love hearing from them! One of our new volunteers recently wrote to us about her experience so far. Read on for more:

I’m newly retired from a decades long career in the financial industry and when Superstorm Sandy hit New York and caused so much upheaval, it was an opportune time for me to sign up as a New York Cares volunteer. The process was seamless, from the website enrollment, to orientation, and then on to choose from a plethora of activities that I could search for by borough, areas of interest, time of day – you name it.

I’ve been blown away by how, within just a couple of hours, we can make a difference. An indelible and positive difference! Helping young adults at The Covenant House improve their interview skills, creating or updating a resume for someone looking to get back into the workforce, joining children in their after school programs and educating them about nutrition while having loads of fun, sorting thousands of garments destined for those affected by Sandy, serving a sumptuous Thanksgiving meal to nearly 500, and the list continues. There are so many ways to help, find a project that fits you and sign up today!
